Athletics
Athletics at the Hawbridge School are primarily of the run and row (actually, paddle) varieties, but include intramural tennis and basketball.
The Hawbridge School takes every advantage of its geographical location on the banks of the Haw River. As part of the PE curriculum, the school offers canoeing and kayaking programs for the students, taught by a true river steward, Joe Jacob. A canoeing instructor at Elon University, and owner of The Haw River Canoe and Kayak Company, Joe spends his summers paddling the pristine rivers, hiking the wilderness trails, and enjoying the majestic open spaces of Alaska. With a master's degree in biology and years as an environmentalist, he brings a scientific and environmental bent to our physical education programs, teaching the students science at the same time he teaches them paddling safety.
A cross-country team is being coached by guidance counselor Victor Talbird, a member of the NCAA Division 1 Cross-Country and Track teams while at Davidson College. While there, he received two varsity letters and won the Fred Borch Award as the Most Inspiring Runner.
